The site has an enormous worldwide user base, with incredibly high traffic, and all that costs money, so they must be incurring fairly large running costs.
So, how on earth do they do it?
They must be making money from somewhere, but for the life of me, I can't see where or how.

they are losing money.
But because they are so large now, if they put up one ad on each page then they would probably make that money back. Basically, they are making a large name for themselves and then they will probably create some contracts with the likes of Google or Microsoft to put ads on their page. Big companies that pair up with ad companies usually can create a deal and get a bonus package for doing so.
That's what Facebook did.

Most likely they have a plan in place where they make a certain amount of money for each visitor that signs up they receive a month. Whenever you turn on the tv all you hear is Twitter. Though I don't understand why its popular. All you can do on it is say what you're doing at one point in time. Another scheme is that Twitter has alot of stockholders where they make money due to the popularity. It's kinda hard to explain.Can anyone explain to me how the people who run Twitter make money?
Twitter helps you collect emails to build a database where then you can send things automatically such as slogans, sales, ect. The more people you have that sign up on your database gets larger in return letting you get the message out to more people which then generally in return gets more traffic to your sales website.
One way was for them to sell the extremely current information that they have from the twitter information from individuals. For example during the terrorist bombing in India, the information from individuals when collectively put together is very valuable to News Media companies. You can say that timely useful data, becomes Intelligence. So media company can sign up licensing agreements with them.
The other method is for them to put up Ads.
