What does the number at the top of my twitter page mean?

After I log into twitter I notice that there is a number in parenthesis in the browser tab. For example my twitter page reads

What does the 18 here indicate?What does the number at the top of my twitter page mean?
It means there have been 18 new tweets from the people you follow since you logged into the page.
